The Indian Pacific train takes you across the vast Australian continent, between Perth on the Indian Ocean, via Kalgoorlie, across the Nullabor plains, along the world’s longest straight stretch of railway line (478kms!) to Adelaide, and on to the Pacific Ocean and Sydney, exploring outback towns along the way.
Explore the continent from south to north on The Ghan, from Adelaide to Darwin, stop at Alice Springs for a few days and explore Ayers Rock, continue on to Tennant Creek and Katherine before reaching Darwin. The journey also operates in teh reverse direction.
New Zealand offers several very scenic rail journeys: the world renowned TranzAlpine between Christchurch and Greymouth across the Southern Alps, the Overlander from Auckland to Wellington, and the Trans Coastal between Picton and Christchurch, travelling along the coast while keeping an eye out for whales and seals or stop for a swim with the dolphins at Kaikoura.
